Introduction

Michele is a dedicated youth worker working within Lincoln City Foundation’s Youth Centre. With hands‑on experience supporting young people, she enrolled on a Youth Work Level 3 course funded through the Youth Investment Fund (YIF) to deepen her understanding of youth work theory and strengthen her professional practice. The training supported Michele to build confidence, develop academic skills and apply theory more effectively in her day‑to‑day work with young people.

Central Support Offer – Identifying the Need

While motivated and passionate, Michele encountered significant challenges when she began the course. She struggled with academic writing, understanding terminology and structuring written assessments. In particular, she found it difficult to translate youth work theory (such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development) into practical examples from her own work.

This disconnect between theory and practice led to frustration and disengagement at points during the course, putting her progression at risk and undermining her confidence in her own ability.

Support Provided

Through the YIF‑funded youth worker training, Michele received tailored, one‑to‑one support from her assessor at need2succeed.

need2succeed is a specialist training provider delivering qualifications and workforce development across youth work, education and the voluntary sector. Their approach is learner‑centred and supportive, helping individuals build confidence, strengthen academic skills and successfully apply theory to real‑world professional practice.

Michele’s assessor provided targeted guidance focused on:

  • Improving academic writing skills, including structuring assignments and breaking down questions
  • Supporting Michele to confidently apply theory to her own youth work practice
  • Identifying assessment strategies suited to her learning style, including visual aids, mind maps and reflective journals
  • Regular check‑ins, feedback and the use of SMART targets to maintain engagement and motivation

The assessor worked closely with Michele to contextualise theory through real examples from her work, helping her reflect on how concepts such as youth empowerment and person‑centred practice already featured in her approach.

The Result and Impact

With ongoing support in place, Michele’s confidence grew significantly. Her academic writing improved, and she became more comfortable articulating her ideas and linking theory to practice. She began using youth work theories more confidently to understand young people’s emotional and developmental needs, supporting them more effectively in building confidence, skills and resilience.

Additional Impacts

Michele’s learning directly influenced her practice. She implemented youth‑led initiatives focused on confidence‑building, decision‑making and emotional wellbeing, both within a grassroots organisation in her local area and through NCS residentials on a national scale. Her improved ability to reflect critically on her work strengthened her professional confidence and contributed to her progression into a management role in the voluntary sector.
