New film shines a light on why KBSK is a happy life-saving space

Social Investment Business is working with Heyday UK on a film project to capture the impact of the Youth Investment Fund on young people and youth services in the most underserved areas of England. Filmmakers, Heyday UK went along to meet young people, youth workers and families at KBSK’s new space in Bodmin, funded by the Youth Investment Fund.

Adie Dove was just 15 years old when she founded KBSK on the council estate where she grew up. Over the last 12 years, it’s gone from strength to strength. It offers families, children and young people a safe haven to express themselves through dance and creative activities.

I would describe it [The Space] as a happy life-saving space. I just really like it; it feels like my life is saved.

Back in 2023, KBSK was awarded at Youth Investment Fund grant to develop a new community facility called The Space. The Space development completed and opened its doors to the community in September 2024. The Space serves as a hub for hundreds of children, young people and families every week, and it’s already making a huge impact in the local community.

In the film, you’ll meet Adie Dove, CEO and founder of KBSK, Nat, Safeguarding Lead, young youth workers and some of the families, children and young people KBSK supports.

Adie Dove, shares the impact of the Youth Investment Fund:

“The Youth Investment Fund has absolutely transformed KBSK. It’s given us an opportunity to create the space that was desperately needed.”

“It’s absolutely changed lives. It sounds dramatic, but it really has. We are very, very grateful to the Youth Investment Fund.”

Nat, Safeguarding Lead, says:

“Bodmin has a lot of problems and issues, but it’s also got some amazing things going for it, but that gets overshadowed by all of these problems and issues.

Here at The Space everything shines. People feel that when they come here. They want to shine too. And that’s why it’s really important that it’s here; and allowing people to shine in their individuality.”

You’ll hear from youth workers, sharing what they love about The Space:

“I love teaching the little ones, they’re so sweet. And I love seeing the sense of community.”

“[The Space] keeps the children off the streets and it reduces crime. Any teenagers who maybe haven’t come from a great home life have an alternative place to go to. They can come here and express themselves in a safe way.”

Parents Natasha and Paul say The Space is having a huge impact on their family. Talking about their son Tyler, Natasha says:

Tyler has ADHD and Autism, so I’m grateful for this place. It gets him out and about and doing things. The fact that he’s getting out and interacting with other children is just amazing to see. Because he is understanding how to interact even if it’s through dance. He isn’t actually talking, but he’s still in a group.
