Celebrating new spaces for young people in Southmead

Southmead Development Trust is a Bristol charity made up of staff, volunteers and residents who work together to keep power in their community. Their vision is to create a thriving and healthy community.

In September, Southmead Development Trust invited partners, supporters, families and young people together to celebrate the official opening of their renovated spaces made possible by a Youth Investment Fund grant of £2.5million. The event was an important opportunity to celebrate children and young people and shine a light on new opportunities to play, make friends, build confidence and learn new skills.

Over the past two years Southmead Development Trust have been working hard to build a new state of the art Boxing Zone for young people; renovate an old building (once a school dining hall) into beautiful and calming spaces for therapeutic work; and make huge improvements to The Ranch Adventure Playground and Youth Space. This included a full re-vamp of the music studio, and solar panels to help keep maintenance costs down. The funding has transformed their sites to create new and inspiring spaces for young people and the whole community.

Youth ambassador, Pierre Fontaine, from Sports for Champions joined children and young people for the celebration. Pierre Fontaine spoke about the importance of community revival, youth clubs and investing in young people. After the official opening speeches, Pierre Fontaine joined children and young people at The Ranch Adventure Playground and Youth Space, to see the amazing new facilities and to play basketball with them.

Our young people deserve to be invested in. They deserve our time, patience and care. They deserve places like The Ranch where they can enjoy being young, the Greenrooms where they can be supported more closely, and they deserve opportunities to build happy, brighter futures. Our mission is very clear. We want children and young people in our community to have access to opportunities to play, make friends, build confidence, be active, and learn new skills – all things that will help them be resilient when life throws its inevitable curveballs. We also want them to have access to more specialist help, like mental health support, when they need it.
