Chief Scout Dwayne Fields made at very special visit to the 35th Derby Scout Group in early May to celebrate the opening of their new headquarters. Local Scouts travelled to the celebration of the new space on foot, utilising the skills they have learnt through Scouting and demonstrating their commitment to reduce car use and limit traffic impact on the local community.
The new headquarters, funded by a grant from the Youth Investment Fund, coincides with the group’s 110th anniversary. Since 1914, the 35th Derby Scout Group and its predecessors have been delivering Skills for Life to young people through an exciting and challenging programme of activities. The funding and major renovations means that they will be there for many future generations to come.
A Youth Investment grant of £414,870.00 has paid for a new building, transforming their site and provision and enabling the Group to grow Scouting in Derby and provide an exciting new facility to their partners and new youth groups. It includes a meeting space, breakout room, kitchen, service room, and accessible toilets. The new building and growing youth provision will reach even more young people from across Derby.
Chief Scout Dwayne Fields said,
“It’s special to see a group with so much history opening a new home for Scouts in Markeaton. The group’s headquarters is a safe space for young people to make friends and learn skills for life. Today’s opening has given us a unique moment to reflect on Scouting in Markeaton’s past, celebrate the great work going on today while looking forward to the future.”
